At the Jewish Collaborative, we believe that everyone is on their own path when it comes to Jewish education, discovery and connecting. Your membership includes educational and social programs for Pre-K through adult. This includes our innovative Hebrew Lab, joyful Kids’ Club, creative LOMED educational program, B’nai Mitzvah prep Junior Chai, empowered BBYO for 6-8 and 9-12, and adult education programs. Young siblings ages 1-4 are welcome at our elementary school activities. Our programs often make the news!
Hebrew Lab: Individualized Learning for Children, Youth & Adults
The Hebrew Lab is a favorite program for our families of kindergarten through 8th grade. (Younger siblings are welcome, and more and more adults are coming on their own as well!) We are committed to guiding each individual on their own journey, which is why each student works at his or her own pace. The program is individualized, so all levels are welcome. Eventual divergence between conversational and Biblical Hebrew is likely to occur (especially for 6-8 graders preparing for B’nai Mitzvah). It is recommended that one caring adult attend per child; however, JCo runs as a Co-Op, so we can help each other with childcare when necessary. Many of our young people also attend programs below.
Our recommendation is that every individual come for an average of one hour a week. The beauty of the Hebrew lab is that you are not committed to the same day every week and if you miss a week, you can always come for two hours the week after. YOU get to decide what works for you and your family.

Kids’ Club for Grades K-5
This youth group is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. (Younger siblings are welcome also.) The mission of the Kids’ Club is to instill in our children Jewish pride, identity, and values in order that they retain a strong sense of connectedness, knowledge and spirituality. We do this by providing a unique environment that is engaging and experiential. Activities integrate family, community and whole-life experiences. All events have a Jewish emphasis, and some are explicitly educational. This is truly a collaborative program. Families take turns designing and hosting events, with support from others. We welcome guests, as long as they stay with their children and to see what we’re all about! Many of these children also attend Family Hebrew Lab (see above) and/or Religious Education (see below).
Kids’ Club is included in membership. Non-members are welcome at a cost of $9 per family per event to cover expenses. If you are interested, please contact Cantor Gabi at Cantorgabiarad@gmail.com.
LOMED for PreK-5th:
Learn, Observe, Make Friends, Explore, Discover
This new, educationally-geared group is for children in Pre-K through 5th grade (younger siblings are welcome also). This is our alternative to a traditional Sunday or religious school. “Lomed” in Hebrew translates as “I learn.” Children learn, observe the world, make friends, explore Judaism, and discover what it is to be Jewish. Learning is accomplished using all the senses and via different hands-on activities that are fun and interactive. Lessons are taught in themes that include: Jewish History through Art; Holidays through Cooking; and Jewish Symbols through Multi-Media.
COST & SCHEDULE
Membership includes all educational programs. For non-members, we ask $9 per child per class to cover expenses. If you are interested and would like to know how to sign up, please contact Cantor Gabi, Cantorgabiarad@gmail.com.
Junior Chai for Grades 6-8:
The Path to Bar and Bat Mitzvah
Our Junior Chai program is one of our longest-standing programs. Students in 6th-8th grades meet together in a relaxed atmosphere where they individually work towards their Bar and Bat Mitzvah. Not every Bar/Bat Mitzvah service looks the same, so neither will their journey. After their Bar or Bat Mitzvah, students integrate into the JCo community through their talents, passions, and interests. Junior Chai is not only a class, participants also plan programs and events for the middle-school community and for all of JCo. Many students also belong to BBYO (youth group).
Within Junior Chai, each Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program is completely individualized. We work with each family to make it the experience that they want it to be. Some students choose to lead the entire service while others decide to focus on a project that they present at their service. Some students do speeches, and others present their Torah portion in other ways. In addition, each service is held at the venue of the family’s choosing.
This article from L’Chaim San Diego Magazine, November 2015 nicely captures what we do.

BBYO for Grades 6-8 and 9-12
BBYO is a national student-run youth group for grades 8-12. JCo has gotten unique permission to expand our program to include 6-7 graders, so that we may form two separate, robust programs: one for middle-schoolers and one for high-schoolers. The goal is for teens in the community to lead fun events in a Jewish context. BBYO gives teens a voice by having them plan and partake in the events THEY want to do. Teens have the opportunity to work on leadership and communication skills, all while forming friendships that can last a lifetime.
6th-8th Grade: JCo’s Younger Program
We call this group our BBYO-in-training. Young teens will begin to learn how to plan, organize, and initiate programs for other teens their age. They will meet with our youth organizer twice a month for planning and will hold one or two events a month. This a great program for teens who not only want to meet other Jewish teens, but want to become leaders as well. 8th graders will be integrated into the 9th – 12th grade group in the middle of their 8th grade year. For more information, please contact Rabbi/Cantor Gabi.
9th – 12th Grade: Traditional BBYO
This is where the true BBYO experience happens. Older teens plan and implement all programming. With guidance from our Rabbis and parent volunteers, BBYO participants will learn skills and make friendships to last them way beyond their high school years. Teens will also have the opportunity to attend BBYO local and national conferences. For more information, please contact Rabbi/Cantor Gabi.
BBYO is FREE for members and non-members! Drop-ins welcome!
